Taking Pictures: A Different Approach To Viewing Reality by Farrell Eaves
“Farrell! Your camera!” Too late - I watched as the camera and tripod sank into the water. A major repair seemed certain but my frugal and determined spirit prevailed, and, in time, the camera was functioning as a photographic tool.
Only now the images produced by the camera are very unusual and, in many ways, even more beautiful than before.
Ordinary cameras see what we see: the outer shell or skin of the world around us. My camera and I peel away this covering and innocently create powerful images, arranging highlights and placing auras where there appears to be none. Where we see pure symmetry the camera sees a harmony of geometric shapes. The images, a spatial representation of the interaction of reflected and refracted light, are seemingly in constant motion. After all, this is photography – where the vocabulary of the camera is the signature of the photographer.
My purpose in creating these images is to share my excitement and wonder with you. As you view them, rethink your way of seeing and allow yourself to experience the intimate contract with the subject in childlike wonder. I create the composition and the camera creates the images, seeing beauty where we do not. In this sense, I often wonder if perhaps the camera is actually composing me.
